There are no specific marks on this to determine exactly who the maker was however there were several top artists at that time working in lead. This is finely cast and hand finished. It has a slight flattening to one cheek and ear but otherwise in great conditon. It has probably had the square base added later as I would expect it to be set straight into stone. The sword is a gem - with a thread into the open hand. We have it set on a tall granite pillar. This would be fantastic in a flower bed or long grass meadow. A wonderful bronze seated figure in top condition - This figure I believe is a 19th century Grand Tour figural model of The Neapolitan Fisherman Fountain. It is displayed on a really unusual shaped pedestal of blue Irish limestone. A stone like Istrian stone and as hard as marble. The figure, which is set up as a water fountain, came from a private residence in Gloucestershire and the pedestal directly from the south of Ireland. The original Roman bronze fountain was first excavated in Pompeii in 1823 and now can be seen in Naples in the Archeological Museum. Certainly one of the highest quality at a time when cast iron was at its best. I believe them to be French. This is quite an early one - 19th century I would say but difficult to tell. There has been some sinkage into the base because of the weight of the lead. This small plaster maquette is in the form of a man embracing a lion and was owned by the late John Rendall. It is an absolutely charming study with a lovely story behind it. It is inscribed on the base "Two Beautiful Beings, Happy John & a Lion Called Christian" From the collection of John Rendall 1945-2022 who was the former owner of Christian the lion. This incredible story hit the headlines back in 1969 with images of two men (John Rendall and Anthony Bourke being greeted by a fully grown male lion in the African bush. The two Australian men had been London flatmates when they bought a lion cub from Harrods. Raised in a flat in Chelsea, on a diet of steak, the lion was later flown to Kenya to begin a transition into the wild at the Kora National Park. It is a happy story with Christian the lion successfully going on to lead a pride of lionesses and a dynasty of cubs. A famous and star studded story with obvious love for this animal depicted in this simple but charming maquette. The stone speaks to you covered in beautiful lichens. So beautiful. This never would have had an overthrow. It has a small iron ring wherre the bucket lead would have been threaded. Worn with the use over time. There is an ancient diagonal crack in the wall in one place which I am loathe to do anything about as it is part of its life, its history but a pin could be quietly put into the stone if worried. I think it is nothing to worry about but happy to do if required. A simple overthrow could obviously also be added as required too. A really old genuine English copper in good condition with a really wonderful verdigris colour. Unfortunately at some point someone has painted it over in places with black paint. We have gently removed some of that but so not want to blast off the base colour of the copper because it has taken hundreds of years for that to build up. This makes it a little speckled in places and still with some black paint remaining. A truly amazing pot though. Big enough for a good sized tree. A real treasure.
